Winter Wading Boots

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good winter wading boot? I have the Simms G3 felt bottoms and they are horrible on ice and snow. I've had close encounters of slipping and falling. So I'm looking into purchasing a secondary wading boot just for winter steelheading. I don't feel like messing around with sticking studs into my felt bottom (afraid of ruining it). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

I've had no problems traversing streams with studded wading boots.
Also, they're recommended around these parts for fear of a Didymo spread (felt retains moisture and increases the chance of harboring and spreading it). I'm fairly certain you would be able to locate a quality studded boot for prices as reasonable as $70.

Cabelas just came out with a new wading boot with replaceable screws for $99. No felt.

Thanks guys. I heard of aquastealth being pretty good. So I think I'm going to check out some studded aquastealth boots.

You do want the studs to be carbide tipped and replaceable. Sometimes a studded tie-on sandle allows you to use your summer boots in the winter, but if you have the cash buy two pair, just bring your winnter socks when trying them on and err on the side of looser rather than tighter for winter brouges. Note tie-on studded sandles are not good in mud, also you need to put on a saftey strap if they accidently come off

My advice would be not to wear stocking foot waders in the winter. Cabelas 5mm spring run bootfoot are awesome, never get cold. Stocking foot are more comfortable but in cold weather I could never keep my feet warm. Chota and cabelas guide boots with felt are good though.

Bootfoot waders are generally warmer than Stockingfoot waders, its a blood circulation issue. I like to attach a modified pair of K1000 tie-on korkers (studded sandels) which I convert to a buckle on pair, then you can use them on any type of wader, and don't have alot of excess drag the standard buckle on korkers have. I also do replace the studs with tunston champ golf spikes

Bootfoot neos, with the boots at least 1 full size larger than your normal shoe size (and a pair of heavy socks over thin socks) should do the trick.

I dunno . I wore studded aquastealths for many winters without having serious cold problems wearing booties. It seems to be more important to wear high quality wicking socks. The booties on whatever Simms breathable waders I have are neoprene and worked OK in conjunction with good socks. So I bought a pair of bootfoot neoprene Orvis something or others, which also work fine. Neoprene can get sweaty if you walk around a lot though.
If I only had one pair I'd stick with breathable bootfoots with layering and merino wool socks, probably 2 pair.
Always buy a size or two larger than you need to leave room to wiggle your toes, and not crimp your circulation.

Fishbreath has the right idea as far as I'm concerned. The only way I would ever wear neos again is if my breathables sprung a catastrophic leak and I couldn't get them fixed before the next outing. With proper layering they are plenty warm. If your feet start getting cold it's probably because:
1.) you don't have the proper socks or
2.) your boots are too small or
3.) you are hanging out in the same hole for too long!! Get out and walk fellas. Laughing
